Kanata Dragons

Special Needs

The Kanata Dragons are pleased to offer children with special needs the opportunity to play soccer. We are able to offer this program to a limited number of children with the assistance of dedicated special needs staff who are hired by the Kanata Dragons for the duration of the summer season. In previous seasons children with autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome have participated in this program.

About the Special Needs Program

The Special Needs Program focuses on inclusion while providing one on one support for children who might need a bit of extra help. Athletes with special needs play on teams with other athletes, thereby promoting a sense of belonging. Each athlete with special needs is accompanied by a helper who will be at the field every week to help the athlete when needed. The helpers, with the assistance of the Special Needs Coordinator, will keep a record of how each sessions goes, so that they can determine what works best for each child. Parents are welcome to speak to the helpers or to the Special Needs Coordinator with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Program Objectives

  • Achieve individual objectives throughout the 10-week soccer season.
